The majority of us have somewhere to go during our days, whether it be work, school, or the store and we all get there different ways, whether it be car, train, bus, subway, biking, or our own two feet. Take advantage of this time either alone or together with others to set the tone for your day.
Have you ever noticed how the way you start your day has a drastic affect on the rest of your day? If you start your day in a funk, rushing around, the rest of your day feels disorganized and hectic. If you start your day off calm and slow, the rest of your day is smooth and easy. Even if you start your day off hectic you can turn it around with this Grat-i-tude practice during your commute.
I drive to work Monday-Friday and like to take advantage of the time by myself to list off everything I can think of that I am grateful for. Personally, I say the list out loud. If you take a train, bus or other public transportation you might want to rethink the verbal expression of this gratitude, but in the end, you do you. It doesn’t matter what others think.
I start the minute I start driving and literally just start listing….
“I am grateful for the sunshine. I am grateful for the car I am driving in. I am grateful for the heat in the car. I am grateful for my cell phone. I am grateful for an easy commute. I am grateful for my ability to drive to work. I am grateful for a job I love. I am grateful for my family. I am grateful for the healthy breakfast I just ate (am about to eat). I am grateful for my husband. I am grateful for my home. I am grateful for having gas in my car. I am grateful for my cute outfit….” And on, and on, and on.
Even if you go into this practice frustrated, running late, or anxious this practice will help calm you, bring you to the present, and set a pleasant tone for the rest of your day.
For the next 5 days, every time you commute anywhere try listing off everything you can think of that you are grateful for. Once you run out of things, simply stop and be grateful for this day.
Today I am grateful for:
-Spending time with my family
-The fabulous new hot pink chair I found
-Fresh and healthy food in the fridge
